Guidelines & Procedures
Children in the Library
The Alfred C. O’Connell Library welcomes patrons of all ages. However, concern for the safety of children as well as proper stewardship of library resources prompts the following:
- A child is defined as anyone who appears to be under the age of sixteen.
- A responsible adult must accompany children in the library at all times. The presence of unaccompanied children will be reported to Campus Safety.
- A child who is disruptive, uses library resources inappropriately, or damages library materials or equipment, will be reported to Campus Safety.
- Alfred C. O’Connell Library computers are intended for the use of Genesee Community College students, faculty, staff, and adult community patrons who obtain library cards.
- Library computers do not have content filters; adults may not log children on to use the computers.
Library staff members cannot provide supervision or act as guardians, nor are they expected to search for accompanying adults or verify the ages of children. All concerns re unattended children will be reported to Campus Safety.
Community Users
Community patron cards are issued to GLOW (Genesee, Livingston, Orleans, and Wyoming county) residents and are required to check out materials in the library’s circulating collection. This includes books, audiobooks, and music CDs.
Computer access is available to card holders. Community patrons must show their card at the Information Desk and a librarian will sign them onto a computer. Computer use includes on site access to internet and licensed research databases.
Students have priority at all computers and library equipment. Some equipment might not be available to guest users. Be aware: during busy times of the semester there may not be a PC available for guest use.
Community patrons are encouraged to ask a librarian if they have questions. Students should not be approached for assistance.
Study rooms are available for GCC students, faculty, and staff only. Reserves are also student use ONLY.
We make every effort to keep the community informed about library hours, however, hours may change with little to no notice. If there is inclement weather, call or check the college website before driving to campus.
Community patrons are responsible for following all library guidelines and procedures. Failure to do so may result in suspension of privileges. Please note: Library hours, printing conditions and software packages may change with little to no notice due to circumstances beyond our control.
Computer Use
Users of Genesee Community College computing resources have the following responsibilities:
- A GCC network account is required for logon. Network account usernames and passwords are not to be shared with anyone else, and are not to be used to log another individual onto a library pc. Individuals without an account should speak to a librarian for other options. See #9 Computing Policies – User Responsibilities
- Students have first priority on all library pcs and equipment at all times.
- Priority access to workstations is for course-related research and assignments. If you are using a workstation for other purposes, a librarian may ask you to leave your workstation if it is needed by another user.

Food & Drink in the Library
The Alfred C. O’Connell Library is committed to providing a comfortable, clean, safe environment for all of our patrons. We understand the need for a snack or drink to keep you energized while studying in the library. However, because spilled food and drink present a potential hazard to library resources and equipment, and may disturb others, the Library asks that everyone take reasonable precautions when eating or drinking in the library.
Guidelines:
- Drinks with lids are allowed. Light snacks, such as chips, candy, pretzels, or other small portions are also allowed.
- Hot food, messy food, regular sized meals, or food with strong smells should be consumed in the cafeteria or the Student Union. If you are eating this type of food, Library staff may ask you to leave the library.
- Food trays are not allowed.
- Please report accidental spills as soon as possible so that they may be cleaned up.
- Please dispose of trash properly in order to leave a clean workspace for your peers.
Health & Safety
Please follow these health and safety guidelines when using the Alfred C. O’Connell Library:
- Individuals must wear appropriate attire, including shirts and shoes, at all times while inside the Library.
- Sports equipment, including lacrosse sticks, baseball bats, soccer balls, etc., must remain under your control and must remain on the floor at your feet while you are studying in the library.
